Lichfield City CC Spring Road Race - 2nd  May 2010

In this years race riders faced a cold windy day with rain threatening at the start. The poor conditions made early breakaway attempts a tough prospect and few riders made any great impression on the peloton. As the laps rolled by and legs became tired a group of 4 riders pulled clear and started to build a sizable gap.

Local rider Matt Gee (Raleigh Avanti/ Freedom Cycles) was heavily marked as the man on form, having won two recent races and any move containing him was closely marked. However as the last lap approached he made his move with another local, Will Penn of Mamoth Lifestyle. These two quickly closed the gap to the leaders, making six at the head of the race. The final climb to the finish at the rocket was a tough test and the efforts of Matt and Will to cross the gap would surely have  taken their toll. But Matt's excellent form and determination almost saw him through as he finished a close second to Mike Jones on Paramount CRT. Will Penn brought up the rear of the group in sixth place. Other local riders to finish were Harry Penn and Kieran Larkin. Kieran  was in his first ever road race and finished with the main field, an excellent start to his racing career.

Many thanks to all who worked the make this event a great success.
